SHIELD: A Women’s Self-Defense Series

Rough Hands BJJ presents Shield: A Women's Self-Defense Series — a six-week Saturday program designed for women of all fitness levels and zero prior martial arts experience.

Next Course Starts MAY 23

A group of women in a gym or martial arts studio, some practicing self-defense moves while others observe or wait, with walls decorated with speakers.

Classes designed and taught by and for women

Each session is a standalone mini-seminar taught by Shelby York, a nationally recognized instructor holding belts in both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Krav Maga, with over 10 years of experience teaching real-world safety and active threat response.

This isn't a fitness class with self-defense sprinkled in. This is real, practical training — built around how attacks actually happen, what the research says about survival, and what your body can actually do under stress.

You'll learn situational awareness and threat recognition. Verbal boundary-setting and how to break the freeze response. High-percentage strikes and how to escape the ground — the part most programs skip entirely. And how to make fast, clear decisions when the stakes are highest.

Next Course Starts MAY 23

Two people practicing jiu-jitsu grappling techniques on a mat.

Six sessions. Every Saturday, May 23 through June 27.

The class meets on specified Saturdays at 11am and lasts 2 Hours. This will give attendees ample time to ask questions, train, and absorb the material without being overwhelming.
