Adults training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Rough Hands BJJ in Louisville

ADULT BEGINNER PROGRAM · LOUISVILLE, KY

You Don't Need the Whole Game on Day One.

Most gyms hand you a technique, throw you into live rolling, and call it a lesson. That's not learning — that's brute force. Rough Hands gives every new member their Core Game: a specific set of positions and moves that work together, so you're actually playing Jiu Jitsu from day one instead of getting smashed and told to "figure it out." It's the fastest, simplest, most approachable way to learn Jiu Jitsu in Louisville.

The problem with how most people learn BJJ

Jiu Jitsu is enormous. Thousands of techniques. Guards stacked on guards stacked on guards. The same armbar with five different names depending on who's teaching it that day. Stand on the mat as a total beginner and it doesn't look like a martial art — it looks like a pile of unrelated moves with no floor underneath any of it.

Give it a few months, and the dots start to connect. You realize half those "different" techniques are really the same handful of ideas wearing different jackets. The pile starts to look like a system.

That's the part nobody tells you up front: the dots do connect. It just takes a long time to get there — and most people don't have years of patience to burn finding that out. They try a few classes, still can't see how any of it fits together, and walk away thinking it's just not for them.

What a Core Game actually is

Think about how you'd pick up any strategy game. Nobody hands you every card on day one and tells you to go win. You start with a small set of pieces that work well together — a starter deck — and you learn to actually use them. Once you know how they work, you start swapping cards in and out, building something that's yours.

That's how we teach Jiu Jitsu at Rough Hands.

On day one, you get your Starter Deck: a specific set of positions, techniques, and concepts, taught in an order that actually makes sense — not a random highlight reel of cool moves you saw on YouTube. A working set of tools that fit together, so you're playing the game immediately instead of just watching it from the sideline.

As you get comfortable, you start expanding. Add a sweep here. Swap a guard there. A year in, your deck looks nothing like the person's next to you — because it's built around your body, your goals, your game. You can't borrow someone else's map to get there. You have to build your own.

Whatever brought you through the door

Maybe you want to know what to do if things ever go bad. Maybe you're tired of the treadmill and want a workout that doesn't feel like punishment. Maybe you've seen enough Jiu Jitsu online to be curious. Maybe you just want something new and genuinely fun.

All good reasons. And here's the thing — the Core Game works for every one of them, because solid fundamentals are simultaneously good self-defense, a great workout, and genuinely fun. You don't have to pick a lane on day one. Come find out which one you're actually here for.

Why Rough Hands

Rough Hands is for anybody. It's not for everybody — and we're fine with that. We built this gym for people who want a real, welcoming place to get better, not a room full of tough guys trying to prove something to each other.

Our students range from their 20s to their 60s. Close to half our adult students are women — almost unheard of in this sport. Nobody here is trying to make you tougher for the sake of it. We're trying to help you build a game you can actually use, on a mat where everyone's rooting for you to get there.

How it works

  1. Start with a free class. Come see the Core Game in action. No gi, no experience, no pressure.

  2. Sign up for the six-week introductory offer. You'll get a free gi and enough mat time to know if this is really for you.

  3. Keep building. Add classes, add positions, expand your deck for as long as you want to play.

Class times are built around real schedules — so training doesn't have to compete with the rest of your life.
